racing, by the mile, is a result of the Romans using mile markers on their roads, and the British having running races from one to the next a couple hundred years ago

 establishing the mile as a measurement of how far people would race.

  1. Curiosity: The word 'mile' comes from the italian 'mille', which means thousand. And that's because the soldiers used to mark every thousand steps with some stones. That's also the origin of the term 'milestone'.
