The question is asked, "Great looking muscle car, why were these cool looking cars so quickly changed and made into ugly mid 70s designs? The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standard inflicted on auto manufacturers in 1975 has a lot (everything maybe?) to do with it.
Jack. Yes. You are correct. Which forced the auto design departments to put out dowdy looking cars and stunting the cool look forever. When people cave to government knowing better then we do, Then we have the Midas touch in revers!
When I was 16, in 1981, I owned a 69 Cyclone Cale Yarbrough edition, similar paint to the one in the picture, red and white with a black hood scoop and rear wing on the trunklid,
paid $275 for the car, added some slot mags with oversize tires and skyjacker air shocks, drove it a couple years and sold it for $550 at an auction.
at the auction that night there was a guy with a 70 GTO Judge 4 speed, that I was interested in but his reserve was an outrageous $1,600 and he didnt get a single bid, I later went to the owners house and it, but the shifter was out of adjustment and I thought that the price was too much. LOL, now that same GTO is worth $60K and the cyclone is probably worth $40K

ReplyDeleteBeautiful, it wasn't the too distant future that the government implemented the 5mph bumpers. Why then? long story short...government.
