For some reason, San Diego changed the name of Mechanic St to 33rd Pl... when they already have a 33rd St just a block away. So, how does this stupid idea not cause problems giving directions to ANY one needing to find 33rd Pl?

this reminder remains... and caused me to get curious why the street was renamed. To something as stupid as "Pl" when it's not a cul de sac, it's a street. It ought to be at least a Blvd, or Ave.

I recall seeing something that defines all these ways of naming a street a long time ago.

I tried finding this, in the old maps, and didn't get any answer https://www.oldmapsonline.org/map/rumsey/0041.028

  1. This isn't uncommon.
Chicago has a 'place' every other street that corresponds to the vast majority of 'streets' on the south side.
