still doing some family tree research, and found I'm distantly related to the co-founder of the Eaton Corporation

In 1896 he was in the Williams College yearbook

In 1898, he was a volunteer in the New York infantry for the Spanish American War, signed up as a private for a 2 year enlistment, age 24. Disbanded by wars early end in Oct 1898 https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/27160/images/dvm_LocHist011438-00287-0?pId=552

In 1911 Joseph O Eaton (father was a famous painter) invested in a new idea -- the very first gear-driven truck axle.

Transportation was on the verge of dramatic change, automobile and truck use was starting to become widespread, and the world was on the brink of its First World War.

A small company was started when patented gear-driven truck axle inventor Viggo Torbensen teamed up with Joseph Oriel (J.O.) Eaton, an aspiring young businessman, to found Torbensen Gear and Axle Company, the precursor of today’s Eaton.

When J.O. Eaton helped start the new company in Newark, NJ, he provided an acute business sense, but lacked practical automotive experience. Having left the men’s clothing business to provide the financing for the original truck axle business, Eaton never learned to drive during his long career with the automotive industry. He allegedly got into an electric car once, pulled the lever, and ran into the garage. He got out and never attempted to drive again.

This lack of knowledge was not enough to deter Eaton from pursuing a career in the automotive business. Even though the company only sold seven axles in the first year, Eaton soon moved operations to Cleveland, OH, to be closer to the fast-growing automobile industry in the Midwest and maintains a presence there today. By 1916, the company produced more than 10,000 axles – many of which were installed on the U.S. Military trucks shipped to Japan during World War I.

If you're wondering where you've heard of the company Eaton's name from, it could be from Eaton superchargers, transmissions, Eaton Detroit Spring (helped restore Gen Patton's WW1 tank https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2018/01/pattons-tanka-world-war-i-era-ford.html )
and it's a town in Ohio named for a general in the Barbary coast war

I want to thank "Slow Walker In Georgia" for inspiring me to make a new category "so awesome it made my day"

this post made my day. Cheers to Rebecca!

Sending me that, had me realize, that there have been a lot of posts that really made my day, and I don't have a tag/link for them
Well, Now I will, and here are some of the posts that will get tagged with it"

I love a billboard war between competitors! Ravenel Ford and Marchant Chevrolet were having a billboard war and Ravenel Ford intends on seeing this battle until the end!

nice looking Falcon!

this guy nailed it... his Nova station wagon is so cool it got it's own Hot Wheels

This Charger R/T has the exact same rims and tires my 71 Challenger had in 1993

I shit you not, I had N50 Pro Trac Racing Profiles... on 10" slotted mags. I bought them new from a guy who'd bought them for his 69 Road Runner, then he found they wouldn't fit. I first had them on my Dakota, then put them on my Challenger

they looked REALLY good on my challenger

This is exactly the way I remember Zurakowski's Gremlin X in 1990

compliments to Rebecca McHugh on her success in the mobile gourmet foods business in Wrexham! She's started out small, with a horse trailer instead of a food van, her coffee business is 'Meet me in the Morning'

After achieving a first-class degree in hospitality, founder Rebecca McHugh returned home with the dream of creating something ‘proudly Welsh.’

”I wanted to create a sustainable cafe to showcase Welsh hospitality and produce. I couldn’t afford a lease on a cafe so I hoped that by starting small and mobile, I could build something that could be transferred into a cafe when the money allowed.

a court found that holding a cell hone and looking at the mapping application on the phone without “active manipulation,” was not violating the hands free “operating” a cellphone as outlined by state law, but THEN some asshole govt lawyer appealed and the appeals court disagreed. It's now a court result that holding a phone, and looking at the map ap, is illegal. MFSOBGD BS!

The original court found 'there must be something equated to carrying out a function, actively using or manipulating the phone while holding and driving,” court documents read. “This may include talking, listening, emailing, browsing the internet, playing video games, or otherwise engaging with the smartphone. Merely observing GPS directions on the phone does not constitute the kind of active use or manipulation to trigger an infraction under the statute.”

I agree, it's not like looking at a Rand McNally while driving was illegal, or using the damn car radio, or changing a cassette or CD was illegal - though I won't argue that they take your eyes off the road. So does eating a burger, drinking, and reaching for those items from the cupholder or passenger seat, chatting with a passenger and occasionally looking at them... this isn't behavior that causes cars to collide, or leave the road. It's merely being relaxed at the wheel, and experienced at driving, and able to maintain your cars direction, lane use, and velocity, while doing other things.

the California Court of Appeal for the sixth appellate district concluded that the term “operating” under the aforementioned law “prohibits all use of a handheld phone’s functions while driving, including looking at an application on the phone.”

That the state law prohibits the handheld use of cellphones while driving applies to holding phones operating as navigation systems.

Damn! More govt bullshit in order to ticket tax vehicle operators with traffic cameras! Using a map is not TALKING on a phone, it's not as damn distracting!

I just thought you oughta know about this. I doubt it's going to make mainline news

The USS LST 393 – short for “landing ship tank” for its main function of carrying large equipment such as tanks and trucks – is one of only two remaining LST ships in their original military configuration

“LST 393 was part of a huge invasion fleet and carried 28 Sherman tanks to help with the big fight that happened in Normandy on June 6, 1944,” Stephenson said.

The ship carried tanks, trucks, artillery and equipment and supplies “and went to the worst of the beaches” of the D-Day invasion, Omaha Beach

It will be the star of the event at the LST 393 Veterans Museum on Muskegon Lake on Friday and Saturday, June 6 and 7.

I was shocked to see this in an office building parking lot today... someone uses it to commute to work!

a Ferrari Roma was purchased from a luxury dealership in Denver and shipped to a luxury dealership in Minneapolis. Except the Italian sports car never arrived. Someone on the inside posed as a transporter, and no one checked for a legit manifest when they handed over the keys

Minnesota is going to legalize motorcycle lane splitting on July 1st. I hope the hospital emergency rooms are ready for a flood of donor cycle riders who aren't experienced at avoiding lane changing commuters who don't use turn signals

Nothing forces a biker to lane split, there isn't a lot of reason for Minnesota riders to quit driving their bike in the lane, like cars do. It's not like they're in Arizona in 120 degree heat.

https://www.kare11.com/article/news/local/breaking-the-news/lane-filtering-splitting-heres-what-to-know/89-e876edbe-a7ef-49c4-a6be-981c808bfd9a

former Top Gear/Grand Tour producer Andy Wilman has lost his driver's license (for the next 6 months).... 4 speeding tickets in 3 years due to speed cameras, and it's an automatic license suspension.

Wilman had already had three previous speeding offenses on his record in the past three years, having received three points on his license each for infractions on January 5, 2022, September 5, 2023 and September 29, 2024.

The three points from Wilman's 2022 violation were just two weeks away from being removed from his record when he was caught speeding this last time around. He was that close to avoiding a license suspension.

The way the UK driver's licensing system works is that if you accumulate 12 points within a three-year period, you lose your license for six months.

A car ended up going off-track on the Autopia ride at Disneyland's Tomorrowland, the only existing Tomorrowland attraction dating back to the first date Disneyland opened in 1955. Mr Toad was not driving it.

Detroit's M-10 , the Lodge Freeway won't get a speed limit increase, regardless of the far improved abilities of cars now vs when that freeway was made, and everything had drum brakes, and lousy suspension, and bias ply tires. Not that the morons in the Michigan Department of Transportation realize these facts

The speed limit on the 70 year old M10 is officially 55 mph, and will never change, despite everyone speeding much faster than that, and why? The reason is geometry, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation traffic and safety engineer Josh Carey, he says it's not geometrically fit for a higher speed limit. "The curves, sight distance, shoulder widths and acceleration areas on the ramps all do not meet a 70 mph design speed,"

Carey is likely 41 years old, to young to have any first hand knowledge of bias ply tires, cars without disc brakes and airbags.

Do those practical upgrades even register on the young engineers who are looking for a lifetime career of not rocking the boat at their hard to come by govt job in Detroit? Probably not.

Did you hear about the car transporter burning and abandoned off the coast of Alaska? Probably not, there are no Porsches on it, like that ship in 2022, and not in port, like the ship in 2020

The cargo ship is carrying around 3,000 vehicles, including 800 electric vehicles, and a fire broke out onboard. The crew abandoned it off the coast of Alaska.

The Liberia-flagged ship left China's Yantai port on May 26 and was on the way to Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico, according to LSEG data

in 2022, a ship carrying Porsches, Audis, VWs, and 200 Bentleys https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2022/02/four-911-gt2-rs-models-and-33-other.html made a lot of headlines, as a lot of rich people had Porsches paid for, but not insured? Just woke up to hear the news that their GT3s were very extra crispy on day

the one in 2020 caught fire on June 4th https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2020/06/an-automotive-cargo-ship-at-port-of.html in port, and the cars were used, getting transported over seas.

ever heard of a WW2 ambulance with a nose art pin up?

Picture of “Beached Bessie”, a former French ambulance used by the Germans, gift of a US Officer to the ARC.

Quite heavily decorated (paintings removed by order of the CO), the vehicle first served as a transport for the American Red Cross contingent, but was later taken over by the 25th General Hospital for use as a mess truck to carry the food to the different wards, being christened “Meals on Wheels”.

This vehicle saw some use during the hospital’s stay at Lison, between August and November 1944.

"ain't nothing gonna break my stride, ain't nothing going to slow me down, oh no, I got to keep moving!" "Break My Stride" by Matthew Wilder

If that put the song in your head, and you're thinking.... huh, that was a good song I haven't heard in decades, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4c_SkROzzo

In its latest survey, AAA found that among its test group of 1,128 Americans over the age of 18, just 16 percent report that they’re either “likely” or “very likely” to purchase an EV as their next vehicle, which is the lowest such percentage recorded since 2019.

Meanwhile, those that said they are “unlikely” or “very unlikely” to purchase an EV rose from 51 percent to 63 percent year-over-year, the highest since 2022.

As for why this is the case, respondents cited a few familiar concerns pertaining to EVs. The biggest are high battery repair costs, which 62 percent said was an obstacle to purchasing an electric vehicle for them. followed by purchase price (59 percent), suitability for long-distance travel (57 percent), lack of public charging stations (56 percent), range anxiety (55 percent), safety concerns (31 percent), challenges installing home chargers (27 percent), and the potential elimination of tax credits (12 percent).

This survey comes right on the heels of J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Electric Vehicle Consideration (EVC) Study, which found that more than half of U.S. shoppers are “likely” or “very likely” considering an EV for their next vehicle purchase. However, around 46 percent of U.S. EV owners surveyed by McKinsey & Co. last year stated that they are likely to switch back to an ICE vehicle for their next purchase.

the 2025 Le Mans Classic, July 3-6 in Le Mans, Sarthe, France.

Le Mans Classic welcomes 3 grids in support of the 6 regular grids of the event, which enrich an already full racing program, now cover the history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans over a period from 1923 to 2010!

The Group C Racing and the Endurance Racing Legends, two grids of the Series by Peter Auto. Then will be added the Porsche Classic Race Le Mans grid, bringing together the GTs of the German manufacturer, produced between 1965 and 1981.

GROUP C RACING
 Prototypes from 1982 to 1993
This regulation gave birth to legendary cars, among the most powerful and innovative ever designed, shaped by the most brilliant minds in motorsport.

The main playground of Group C was of course the Circuit de la Sarthe, where these prototypes wrote some of the most beautiful pages of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the World Endurance Championship. Initially dominated by the Porsche 956, despite the resistance of the Lancia LC2, the competition gradually intensified with the arrival of Jaguar, Mercedes, Toyota, Nissan and Mazda. Alongside these great manufacturers, “artisans” such as Cougar, Dome, Rondeau, Spice or WM managed to distinguish themselves.

Group C were also the only cars capable of hitting the 400 km/h mark on the Hunaudières straight, a feat made impossible after the introduction of the two chicanes in 1990. The disappearance of the Group C at the beginning of the 90s marked the end of a legendary era, but their legacy continues to thrill endurance enthusiasts.

My question, is how will they get people to do ATV rides without the risk of crashes and trips to the hospital... speed governors of course, but tip overs would ruin the day.

Looking for odd fun interesting little details at a car show, is like a treasure hunt. This 62 (?) Type 3 notchback still has a Hawaii inspection sticker, and a fender badge from a '64 event in Zurich
