I don't know WTF the makers of the movie NOBODY was thinking when they fact checked the 72 Challenger engine size, after all, they did NOT call the engines in the early 70s by the number of liters.

There was no 4.9 liter Dodge engine, not that I know of in Challengers. This one has the hood scoops, and a badge, so, it's a 340 four barrel I think.

the Mustang 5.0 is a 302, or whatever, so, what the hell would a 4.9 be? as for Mopar v8 engines, there was the 273, 318 poly, 318 LA, 340, 360, 383, 400, 413, 426 wedge and 426 hemi, and 440. Back in the 50s there was a 350 and 361

the 318 didn't get a cool hood, didn't get hood badging.

Hey, at least they used a cool old Challenger. Cool movie, and Christopher Lloyd is awesome in it. If you loved the Equalizer, you'll love this

  1. Ford called the 302 V8 a 5.0 (although according to the conventions of math it should have been 4.9) to distinguish it from the 300 six which was called 4.9. In Australia, where the 300 wasn't sold, Ford called their unique 302 Cleveland V8 a 4.9 (the 351 was 5.8 as in the US). There were a few 4.9 Chrysler LAs. They were de-stroked 340s used in the Trans-Am in 1970 after the rules were changed. To entice Chrysler to enter, the need to produce a certain volume of five litre engines was deleted and the teams were allowed to de-stroke larger units. I agree it's unlikely there's a 4.9 in the thing.

    1. wow, I wish I had your name to thank you properly, as you brought up a solid, undisputed fact, I had forgotten! Bravo, and my compliments! Truly, the destroked racing engines for Trans Am SCCA racing and the NASCAR destroked engines were made for getting the Mopar engines UNDER the limit that put the advantage to the Ford and Chevy engines.
I salute you for a solid win on the trivia challenge! You KNOW your shit!

  2. Doesn't destroking lower the compression ratio? Compensate with head work, decking, piston shape?

    1. oh hell, I'd have to look that up, and that sounds like homework, and I don't do homework anymore. But YOU can! Or we can agree that they probably compensate somehow when making fewer cubic inches, they must do something to make an according amount of power somehow. Even cam profile stuff. Heck, I haven't had time to look into engine design to that level
