I found and photographed one right here in San Diego, about 14 years ago, it was bought and used by a t shirt company to get attention by floating on past the crowds on the beach. I'm trying to find that post, which was before I started using the tag system, in the archives.
Wow, Amphicat 6x6! When I was a kid, the "Space: 1999" sci-fi series was broadcasted on TV. (I don't know how known in the US, because it was a British TV show.) She played the role of a lunar surface vehicle. The story is well... not that long-lasting - all the evil aliens have grown-together eyebrows - but the special effects are still amaze me. It was shot between 1975-1977 way before computer generated imagery. The same special effect team used to work on Space Odyssey 2001. Nice catch, Jesse!
Nice video of one at the link. Trailer unloading for the first 4 min and then fixing and getting it running after that. looks like an absolute blast to operate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4ryuzahlLY

ReplyDeletethat MUST have been the tv show I saw! Thank you! How cool is it that we were watching the same show, and were both impressed with this vehicle? Nice!
DeleteWasn't there a vehicle like this on the kids show H.R. Puff-n-stuff back in the early 70s?
ReplyDeleteI don't know, I didn't watch that show
Delete...while we are located thousands and miles away from each other, living on another continents - if I may add. Yes, that is cool! 8-)
