The historic royal road from Bergen via Filefjell to Christiania (now Oslo) had long been forgotten. Established at the end of the 18th century, it was designed for use by horses, carriages and carts and was therefore hardly interesting in the automotive age.    Photo: Samuel Taipale, Valdres Natur- og Kulturpark, click on it for a really big image

But after years of decline, in 2009 the Norwegian road construction authority “Statens Vegvesen” and numerous partners took on the task of reviving the historically important east-west connection: As a cultural and historical hiking trail, the Königsstraße now leads active holidaymakers on the traces of history, along fascinating trails

The Kongevegen route travels from Vangsmjøsa lake, over the Filefjell mountain plateau and down to Lærdal village by the Sognefjord. The hike is a journey through history. The massive stone walls along the route were handbuilt by thousands of workers, forming the main road between Oslo and Bergen at the beginning of the 19th century.
