There is a hilarious movie about this race. It is a farce made in the early 1950's called, GENEVIEVE. One of the contestants is a stuffed shirt. He and another, the man who owns Genevieve, bet their cars as to who will arrive in Brighton first. The winner gets the other one's car. If you find the movie, it is worth the wholesome entertainment.
