The DC Department of Transportation added a speed camera on the 1400 Block of Bladensburg Road in March... THEN they lowered the speed limit in July. The number of tickets issued skyrocketed. It never was about safety, it was about 1.1 million dollars in fines

Between March and December 2024, more than 26,000 citations were issued by that camera and the city collected $1,142,645 in fines.

DC Councilmember Charles Allen chairs the Committee on Transportation and the Environment. In response to DDOT’s move he said, "It feels like a gotcha. it feels like they're just trying to make a buck off of that and that will undermine people's confidence in focusing on safety, so, we can't have that and I don't want to see the city doing that."
