  1. It's not car-related, but I saw in this article that a company in the UP is the official court supplier for the NCAA men's and women's tournaments. They are in Amasa, which looks close to where you are from.

    1. I saw that too! Yep, Amasa, a really small town, population must only be a 100 or 2, is just past the junction, heading to Marquette. Every day on the ride to high school, we went through the junction and headed the other direction to L'Anse.
It's interesting to me that for any region of the USA, there is a lot of interesting stuff, and history.
I've blogged here about the Yoop, and the travels of Henry Ford and his "Vagabond" friends through the yoop, as my home town was on of many logging camps in the Ford empire, and L'Anse was one of his sawmills and rail roads. Over toward Marquette is the very very very elite "compound" called the "Huron Mountain Club, that Henry Ford couldn't get into, and he wanted quite badly, to be that upper crust elite to be accepted into that circle of snobs, I believe only for his wife's sake.
He was so seton gaining their favor, he blocked any roads from going anywhere near it. I shit you not, there still are no roads to it.
If you want to get a kick out of isolation, that's the place. No road in, only a 5 lake chain that gets you from one distant road, via country club boat, from lake to lake to the country club compound. It's one of the most well kept secrets of the rich and famous you probably have never heard of.
The membership is passed down through families, and rarely does a cabin become available for a new member to be admitted IF the others accept them into the club. https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2019/05/a-small-place-named-big-bay-that-henry.html

  2. I have never heard of the Huron Mountain Club, but it sounds very interesting. I read that some people are able to stay there if they are doing research on the native wildlife, in an old house on one of the lakes.

There is a similar private club on Rattlesnake Island in Lake Erie. The rumors are that it is run by the mafia, but officially, the president of their board of directors is a dealership owner from the Cleveland area, named Bob Serpentini. That would be a great name for someone in the mob, though. There are probably a lot of similar private clubs all over the country, that only the locals know about.

    1. lol, yeah, an island in Lake Erie with Italian run private club, that's not a gambling joint, based in what had been a prohibition era staging area for liquor moved from Canada into the USA, nope. What would give me that idea?
Oh, you bet, private clubs/compounds, only the richest people even hear about? Must be a lot of them. Considering there are ranches in texas that are millions of acres, with private hunting resorts for african trophy animals.
You might even recall the post I did on the dog wagons and quail hunting that presidents enjoy on the Georgia border... no one even thinks of stuff like that unless private planes in small regional airports can deliver the wealthy to and from such weekend hobby vacations.
No doubt there are plenty of hunting clubs, like that Bing Crosby Canadian one I posted about last month, all over the Americas
