How the fine print reads, can be very costly. In the Bahamas you can buy a car for $260. But, it's going to cost $2600 after fees, taxes, shipping and import duty.

on the upside, that's still 1/4 of the cost of a similarly used condition car in San Diego.

So, it's likely worth your time to buy a car there if you vacation there a lot, and then leave it with a friend there, or see about storing it at your favorite hotel, or paying a nice local some money, and maybe the next time you visit, it's still going to be there. Depends on what you can work out, and with who.

Oh, about that who... If you aren’t a Bahamian citizen or don’t have a work permit, it’s not easy to register a vehicle, so you'll probably find it easiest to get a car registered and insured in a Bahamian friend’s name - or friend of a friend. Seriously, if you're on facebook, you probably know someone well enough to ask around and get the name of someone in the Bahamas that they know and trust, who would like to borrow that vehicle to use for 11 months a year when you're not around. Everyone appreciates a back up vehicle. Especially if it's free to use and you are the one covering the insurance, and they only need to keep it gassed up and clean. Offer to cover tires and oil changes.

Now think about that... you'd have a well maintained car every time you visit, and make a friend too! Never underestimate how wonderful a friend is in a foreign country... it's the very best tourguide to the stuff tourists never hear about, like the best food, for example.

And keep in mind, the really beautiful places need 4 wheel drive, and gas is about 5 bucks a gallon
