Actually they did or at least Lincoln tired it back in the early 1970s. You can tell the car had the option because the windshield had a gold tint to it instead of the normal green/blue. Worked real good too. It would completely defrost the windshield of ice and snow in a matter of minutes. I believe it was called a Super Defrost Option.
Ford did offer electrically heated windshields for a time. You could pick them out by their slightly bronze colored glass - and the huge expensive alternators needed to operate them, even for just a few minutes. I have no personal experience with one except noting them on customer cars, which were already clear and warm by the time they arrived at my shop. Joe
I think Jaguar might have used them also. We had a more exotic use for them at NASA's Icing Research Wind Tunnel. The windows between the control/observation room and the wind tunnel test section had this type of glass.

ReplyDeleteIf I am correct, this was standard on the 1959 Rolls Royse sedans. The company advertised the feature.
