Seems to me it's a contrast from the upper left to the lower right, the side that shows rain, the side that doesn't. The side that's lit, and the side that's dark, separated by the bright side walk

 

Ditto, reversed left to right, and in contrast a step further - it's winter vs summer, and both photos were taken on 88th street!
