Pete Townshend smashes his guitar at the end of "My Generation", the audience were stunned as Townshend began smashing his guitar, amid smoke bombs and frightened concert staff rushing onstage to scurry expensive microphones to safety. The Who, after winning a coin toss, performed before Jimi Hendrix, as Townshend and Hendrix each refused to go on after the other - both having planned an instrument-demolishing conclusion to their respective sets.

  1. I just saw Roger Daltrey on Brian Jones' TV show talking about life on the road. According to Roger, Townsend was making sounds with the guitar when he smashed it, as part of the performance. I had never heard that before, but I'm not sure how true it is. They also talked to one of the roadies for the Who, and they said they had 4 guitars and the roadie would glue them back together every night. Daltrey also said that the hotels liked for Keith Moon to destroy his room, because they could charge him for the damage and fix up the room. They would put him in the worst room, so they could fix it up after he left.
