 I don't know why they ever started calling them a range. But I doubt Bob Barker ever called them anything else.

    The cooking appliance has been so called since mid-15c. Originally it was a stove built into a fireplace with openings on top for multiple operations.

    From Old French renge, "row or line of persons", especially hunters or soldiers. "To arrange in rows, make a row or rows of", as in "mountain range".
