he seems to be holding a Winchester model 62, which is a 22... I only know this because I happen to have inherited one, still in the box, never used... now that I know Hemingway was photographed with one, it explains why so many of them are for sale online. Winchester must have sold a lot of them because of this photo
I would want a bigger gun than a .22 if I was on safari in Africa. Most of the wildlife there probably wouldn't even feel a shot from a .22.
