    Also a possibility that it's designed to keep rocks our of that "big open grill" that could damage the radiator tubes/fins, if you were traveling on the back roads.

    It's definitely a bug screen. Try driving across Florida while the 'love bugs' are swarming and you'll know why they needed them!
