Volcanic hot water sprinklers at a ski resort in Japan to prevent the roads from freezing up

http://mildlyinteresting-blog.blogspot.com/2020/02/these-sprinklers-on-road-near-ski.html

Tokyo Ton commented and clarified that:

"These are not salt water, but hot water from volcanic springs. Most of the resort areas have underground thermal springs that are used for mineral baths, with the excess water used to heat and clear the roads. The ski resort we go to in Echigo-yuzawa has these on all the main routes"

  2. We went to Iceland for Christmas some years ago. I remember looking out of our hotel window down onto a park in the morning after a snowstorm and realising that all the pathways were clear. They pump hot water through pipes underneath roads and pavements to keep them ice free. They have so much surplus geothermal energy that they not only heat the lake in the middle of Reykjavik so the birds have somewhere to paddle around, they actually heat the sea so people can have a swim in the middle of winter. Wonderful place.

    1. A big topic of conversation when we got there was that recently a gang of drug dealers had been convicted and 16 (I think) of them had been jailed. It doubled the country's prison population.
