the obscure factor is pretty high on this... but in 1975 Alexander Calder (invented the mobile, and the BMW art car ) gave the first two model planes below, to Thomas King, from Dallas



You might dismiss the mobile as a kids toy for bassinettes or cribs, but they are inherently fascinating balanced pieces of art that didn't exist until Calder invented them in 1932
For a moment consider how amazing it is to invent something that no one in human history (any one could have invented the mobile, it's dead simple, like balancing rocks) ever had before. Then realize that not only did Calder invent them, as major large scale art works, but that they were also scaled down for uses as mundane as babies entertainment.

Thomas Barrett King was the creator of well-known marketing programs for Braniff International Airways as Vice President of Advertising and Promotion. In addition to implementing the "End of the Plain Plane" campaign, he also developed two "Flying Colors" programs which featured famed artist Alexander Calder using actual jetliners as his canvas for works of art.
