Maybe to put in cylinders for long term storage before 5W oil was available?
Probably similar to Marvel Mystery Oil and other "top oils", Supposed to lubricate rings and valves.Ray Magliozzi (Car Talk) said: "Marvel Mystery Oil is kind of like chicken soup.... It probably won't help, but it can't hurt."
May have been for Rotary Engines.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rotary_engine)Total Loss engines, burned some and sprayed the rest on the pilot.
