This source says "promoting hot rods" so I guess the mainstream UK at that time didn't (couldn't?) distinguish between rods and dragsters. Then again, they were probably the only band at the time that were heavily associated (at least lyrically) with cars so a rod/dragster would be the perfect backdrop for a photoshoot. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/culturepicturegalleries/5924714/Before-they-were-famous.html?image=12
