I wonder how many of these the Army sent out in WW2? 4th Australian Armoured Brigade. They saw action in New Guinea at Buna, Finschafen, Torokina and Wewak, later in New Brittan and Borneo. (Thanks Al and Gary!)

  1. The stenciled symbol on the back of the Jeep says this is with the 4th Australian Armoured Brigade. They were formed in 1943, and saw action in New Guinea at Buna, Finschafen, Torokina and Wewak, later in New Brittan and Borneo. The marking is a crocodile under a palm tree with a boomerang underneath that. Looks like a Myford-Drummond lathe.

  2. The photo is of a 1st Division armoured Australian field mechanic mostly for tank repairs.

  3. Its likely these were field modified since the typical set up would have been in a deuce and half with a van body, or a trailer. Island hopping in the Pacific meant anything bigger than a Jeep or a Burma Jeep was often out of the question. I have a picture of another Jeep with a bench grinder, vise and a drill press on the back. Ive also seen photos of Jeeps with generators in the back to run equipment like this.
