From "Old Images of Philadelphia"

On December 14, 1965 a young woman drove her 1965 Mustang into the subway after being told to "follow the trolley tracks".

She eventually realized her mistake after making the turn at 36th and Woodland. She then locked her car, and walked to 36th and Sansom, where she went to the street to summon police.

It turned out they were already looking for her.

This classic picture of the incident was in the next day's Philadelphia Bulletin, showing PCC 2034 pulling the car out of the subway. Ironically 2034 would itself be involved in a subway collision in the same spot in the picture less than two years later on December 2, 1967 hitting car 2504. The car never returned to service and was eventually scrapped.

Thanks Steve!

  1. Nomen est omen: Check the Mustang's licence plate's first three letters. ;-)
