this cool old Johnson outboard still has it's original owners manual and gas can .....the manual says 5.3oz of oil per gallon ...the can says 8.0oz per gallon .....what were they thinking?

  1. The motor uses a 24:1 ratio which is pretty rich because the oils of the time (30 weight non detergent) didn't have the lubricating abilities that were later developed. Also the early Johnsons also didn't have bearings, but rather bronze bushings for everything. That might not be the tank for that motor, Johnson made a lot of them in different sizes, some of the larger fishing motors had a 16:1 ratio which is what that tank specifies. 16:1 would smoke a bit but would probably work just fine in a motor that was spec'd at 24:1.

  2. Easy, they wanted to sell more oil! Maybe 8 oz cans?
