Vickie Wood, the first female driver for NASCAR and who turned 100 in March, was a record-setting racer between 1953 and 1963... but some nosy Gladys Kravitz type got the cops to revoke her drivers license - 80 years after getting one.

In 1956 she had the fastest one-way run in measured mile history -- 143.827.

At the beach in 1958 Vicki drove the same car as a well known male driver. He drove the car to an average speed of 139 miles per hour with a one-way run of 142 mph. Then came Vicki's turn. Her average speed was only 136 miles per hour, but her top one-way run was 143.

“In ’59, when the big track opened up, I had a ’59 Pontiac,” Wood said. “Skeeter talked to Bill France and got him to OK me so that I could set a record there. When I got to the track, I got stopped by someone who said women weren’t allowed in the pit area. Bill France comes up and says, ‘Vicki Wood is not a woman. She’s a driver, and she’s allowed in the pits.’”

In 1958 and 1959 she won the Pure Oil Performance Trials in the passing test against male competition, and in 1959 set a new (all drivers) measured mile record of 147.420.

Also among her many speed records was a one-way mark on Daytona Beach of 150.375 mph in 1960, and she also holds the record for fastest laps turned by a woman at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Also in 1960, she joined other drivers in testing the economy of 1960 automobiles April 2 to 6 in the 2,000-plus mile Los Angeles to Minneapolis trek.
