Ft Hood had a dragstrip, and go cart, and motocross racing in the early 70s... at the West Ft Hood Gray Army Airfield runway, it was even NHRA sanctioned

  1. I was stationed at Ft Hood in '76 and remember the temp strip being set up on Railroad or Railhead Avenue next to the railroad tracks on post.

  3. Was stationed at Fort Hood from 9/72 till 3/74. Used to run my 69 Hurst/Olds on the strip (airfield) when ever we could use the field. Used my 72 Hurst/Olds to carry some of my tools. It was also used as an emergency landing field and we were tested on fast we could tear down the lights and move the cables. The timing gear was mounted in a either 2 1/2 ton or five ton truck. Was president of the Fort Hood Motorsports Club for one of the years. I remember a Captain had a 55 Chevy van that was called the "Mad Banana" and was bright yellow. Those were the good times.
