Ever heard of the Galaxie Sunliner convertible hardtop Starlift, at Bonneville in October of ’62, where Holman Moody equipped it with an experimental FE-based 483 cu-in built by Ford engineering.

It was clocked at 182.19 mph and averaged 163.91 mph for 500 miles, setting a slew of international speed records.

That's how little it matters to set some speed records.

But then, so many people were doing the same thing, with so many different vehicles, it simply wasn't very noteworthy and unless it was given a big publicity launch - like the Mormon Meteor, or the Breedlove AMX Javelin, no one heard much about it.

That run at Bonneville certainly impressed NASCAR which promptly imposed a 7 litre (usually expressed as 427 cid) displacement limit. Not fooled by the allocated part-number nor the brochure printed for their benefit, after seeing one win a race, they outlawed the "Starlift" fiberglass detachable hard-top which essentially transformed a Galaxie convertible back into a Starliner.
