I bet there was a reason and plan to those gas pumps paint designs

  1. It looks like they are different brands of gasoline in each pump. I found a website with old pictures of gas stations around LA, and this picture was on there. In the description, it says the station was independent and sold different brands of gas. From left to right they look like Shell 400, Gilmore Blu-Green, Union and Motor Tire.

The pumps look sort of like lighthouses and some lighthouses have bold paint designs so boaters can tell where they are when they see the lighthouses.

    1. oh dang! I didn't notice the light house look to the pumps, that's very cool!
I have looked through Water and Power extensively, and it's a DEEP resource!
and yup, the light house visual ID guide is something I'm familiar with, and should have noticed, if I'd noticed that the pumps are mini lighthouses... wait, did blimps (because this is a Goodyear business) use lighthouses to tie up to? I know that they had ships at sea to moor to, and they did moor to the Empire State building, but lighthouses might have been good too, because of the balcony so near the top of the lighthouse, putting the blimp well off the ground for a safe mooring.
      Food for though I guess.
Born and raised on the shore of Lake Superior, and near enough to Lake Michigan and Erie in my various visits to extended family, and the lighthouses on the great lakes are a thing also, like the New England light houses.
