it seems to me to be obvious that it's a very bad idea to have an airport in a metropolis, DOWNTOWN among the skyscrapers, but, in 1929, they hadn't experienced why, yet. (B 25 in heavy fog crashing into the Empire State Building for example)

For a 1929 airport design competition, H. Altvater of New York proposed a huge wheel of interlocking runways set atop a ring of skyscrapers.

The judges ruled it “beyond the expressed purpose of the competition” but noted that “it is quite possible that in the future some of the features considered objectionable today will prove entirely practical.”

  1. On top of the Pan American Building in midtown Manhattan, we had a heliport fifty stories in the air. The winds were so high that after a couple of years it was closed. The Pan Am building is now known as The Met Life Building located at 200 Park Avenue. It is situated between Grand Central Terminal on the south and the Grand Central Building on the north at 47th Street. Access is via the Park Avenue viaduct that encircles these buildings or down at street level which is a bit problematic.
