that is an impressive overhead gantry truss, if that's the right terminology... and it probably isn't. I've never needed to apply a name to the beam used by an overhead crane. But I've never seen one in a truck this old (1918 GMC)

  2. Here in Ohio, they use this set up on pickup trucks to deliver and set burial vaults and on larger trucks for septic tanks.

    1. wow... that's a surprise! I would have guessed they'd use a small crane, or a big rig with a small side mount crane. I've seen these used on race crew rigs for getting the spare engines moved on and off the rig... but this old photo has it used in a way that I haven't seen before, and it's a 100 years old!
