Karl Bitter’s painted plaster sculpture; Spirit of Transportation, in Philadelphia’s most important transit hub, 30th Street Station

“The spirit of transportation is represented by a triumphal procession of progress led by a little child carrying a model of an airship, a prophetic vision of a mode of transportation to come.”

relocated from PRR’s Broad Street Station, where it was installed in 1895.

  1. The work is painted plaster, not terra cotta. One of my favorite sculptures in Philadelphia. Bitter has been an inspiration my whole career as a sculptor.

    1. Thank you! I don't remember why I said terra cotta.
