In 1950, Allen Hawke left his career at Ford Motor Company, purchased a factory from Ford on the way out the door, and set up shop in Clarkston, Michigan, about 40 miles northwest of Detroit. Three years later, the first Pony Cycles rolled out of the Hawk Tool & Engineering factory.

Hawk Tool & Engineering first sold Pony Cycles directly and through bicycle shops. As production smoothed and gained speed, it struck a deal with Montgomery Ward to make the scooter available through its catalog. This decision branded the scooters as Montgomery Ward models—Special, Deluxe, and Supreme—and started increasing both awareness and demand significantly.
