So, tires... 25% more
batteries... 25% more
Ferraris ... 25% more
But BMWs? Some are made in South Carolina, VWs are made Tennessee, Hondas are made in several states etc.
However, Blazers, Honda HR-Vs, heavy duty Ram trucks, Silverados, are assembled in Mexico, because of either cheaper labor, or lack of health insurance copayments by the car makers
Half of the roughly 16 million cars, SUVs and light trucks Americans bought in 2024 were imports, a White House official said in a call with the press Wednesday.
There's a bit of a problem with the cost of vehicles made in the USA though, they are likely to have so many foreign made parts that they will cost 3 to 10 thou more... Remember the IC Chip shortage of 2020 - 2023? Ford had around 100k trucks parked around abandoned stadiums waiting for someday when the chips would come in from Taiwan again. 11 million vehicles didn't get produced in 2021 because of that chip shortage
So, how does this 25% tariff help the American citizen tax payer?
"I think our automobile business will flourish like it's never flourished before," Trump said in remarks from the Oval Office.
The Trump administration has given multiple rationales for these tariffs, but it has emphasized boosting manufacturing as the chief goal.
The United Auto Workers union praised the move, saying it could mean more shifts for workers at plants with spare capacity.
The White House official said cars imported from Canada and Mexico would be taxed based on the amount of non-U.S. content in the vehicle. So, if a car made in Mexico contains 50 percent American content and 50 percent foreign, the 25 percent tariff rate would be cut in half to 12.5 percent, the person said.
I call bullshit on the idea that the 25% tariff will have cause more cars and parts to get made in the USA. The REASON Ford, Chevy, and Chrysler quit making everything, and all the parts companies (AC Delco, Motorcraft, etc etc) started manufacturing plants in Mexico, was that they didn't WANT to employ Americans, and pay that damn medical insurance, living wages, etc
