some original Carnegie Steel rail, still in service 127 years after rolling off the mill floor

  1. It’s very unusual to see track this old today. The posted piece, old as it is, is probably 90 pound rail (or less), meaning a three foot section weighs 90 pounds. Modern track is up to 140 pound rail, necessitated by the weight of 250 ton locomotives, 15,000 ton plus coal and grain trains, etc.
