the Russians are pulling APCs out of the mothball parking, and making Frankenlaunchers with Navy rocket launcher tubes, that don't even have an aiming system attached/connected

  1. Interesting story.

" ... the Russians have fitted crude sights to the A-22 launchers on the improvised rocket vehicles." The turret is electronically steered and has tubes for 22 rockets. With a live camera feed from a drone the operator could walk rockets right onto a target.

    1. the story I cited my source on, linked about, said "On a warship, the A-22 benefits from colocated optical aiming hardware. But the DVU-3-BS rangefinder is too bulky to fit on a 13-ton MT-LB. It seems the Russians have fitted crude sights to the A-22 launchers on the improvised rocket vehicles. Don’t count on these sights working very well. An MT-LB-A-22 crew’s approach to fire-control is to point, spray and pray."
      yeah, that. Spray and pray.
So, you didn't give your source of "walk rockets onto a target"
See, that's why I'm doing the news, and YOU'RE "unknown" commentor who can't use his or her real name. Huh... coincidence?

  2. The Russians seem to be ok with causing collateral damage, in part to terrorize the Ukrainian citizens, so they don't really need an accurate fire control system.

  3. On the topic of field-modified weapons, I thought this was interesting, but probably not very accurate either. Six AK-74 rifles attached to an anti-aircraft gun mount, with a common charging handle and trigger for all of them.

  4. Those APC's are not from mothball parking, those are legendary MT-LB. They are in constant service from mid 60's and are example of just perfect simplicity, great machines, one of probably greatest tracked platform of all time. But those launchers are something from or mothball parking or even a museum piece, they did not only take those launcher but also old naval gun mounts of various smaller/medium caliber. Probably from the same place. It's just ridiculous but if something work... then it work. I heard great description of MT-LB, it is a "Toyota Hilux" of tracked vehicles, you can slap anything and everything on it. If you will drop simple: MT-LB in Ukraine in to Google you will be rewarded by glorious number of wacky improvisations and versions of that vehicle. My fav for now it's a Frankenstein MT-LB with Wasilok automatic mortar on rear and unguided rocked pod in front taken from heli or plane. This is probably the closest we can get to Mad Max level of vehicle shenanigans.
