I posted about painting to cool off roads in Qatar, (I posted about it in June), to reduce heat by at least 10 degrees. It worked so well, Los Angeles GAF Cool Community Project in Pacoima has just painted almost 90 playgrounds and school parking lots across the city.

The concept relies on a special kind of coating called Invisible Shade. (It’s produced by StreetBond, a GAF company.) Eliot Wall, StreetBond’s general manager, explains that Invisible Shade comes with additives that don’t just reflect visible light (like conventional white paint) but also infrared light (IR). (Sunlight consists of both types, but IR light accounts for most of the heat.)

earlier, in 2019, streets in Los Angeles were coated in a greyish-white material called "CoolSeal" which made the road surface 5°C cooler than the average temperature of a black, asphalt surface.

Tokyo, too, has launched efforts to counter the rising heat on roads by at least 8°C. In July, Saudi Arabia collaborated with the Japanese company, Sumitomo, to initiate a project to cool pedestrian roads in Mecca.
