Mercedes-Benz in Mexico has come up with two brilliant print ads to promote their Intelligent Light System that provides 60% more visibility on the road. The ads feature silhouettes of a cow and a deer standing in the middle of the road at night. The headlights of the Mercedes in front of them are so strong, that they create an “X-ray vision” of the insides of the animals.

I can't help but think that these new super bright headlights will impair the vision of oncoming drivers and cause more accidents than they prevent. I've driven plenty of vehicles from the 6 volt era, and while their headlight illumination is definitely different, I never thought it to be inadequate. Also, these newer, brighter headlight systems require near perfect alignment to prevent blinding oncoming drivers. This might be no big deal right now, when cars that have them are still relatively new, but what about when these cars get older and have had their share of scrapes and bangs? Crooked headlights shining are going to cause some problems then. What about when vehicles are heavily loaded in the rear, causing the headlights to shine higher than they normally would? I think such head lights are perfect examples of "improvements in automotive technology where everyone focuses on the positives without giving any thoughts to the negatives. Not to mention the additional cost and complexity. Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I think many such "improvements" are just means to eventually make automobiles out of the reach of the common man and available only to the elite, which of course is the exact opposite of the principles this country was founded upon.

Should have been obvious to anyone, that I was talking about cars in general and not Mercedes specifically, even though post was referring to Mercedes. All one has to do is compare car prices vs wages over the past 50 years to validate my claim. Improvements in utility of cars haven't kept pace with increases cost and complexity of cars. Difficult to afford and difficult to diagnose and repair. All the technology in the world becomes moot, if the price is out of reach to the buyer, particularly when such technology is a double edged sword. Snarkiness aside, my comment still stands.
