an old Latil TAR with a set of cat tracks! (thanks Shas!)

I'm guessing France, WW1.

  1. Decades of wandering through vast databanks of net. Countless photos, multiple Mack AC's and never, just never I saw one with caterpillar trucks. I start to dig more, using keywords and photo search, just to know more about it, anything. Nothing...

Single peculiar old photo that teach me how much more is under digital dust waiting to be rediscovered. Thx Jesse for posting that, if anyone know anything more about it... please, share your knowledge.

  2. That's not a Mack truck, it a French made Latil TAR all wheel drive field artillery mover.

    2. Latil TAR 1916, good eye and thanks for you I was able to dig more. http://www.avant-train-latil.com/galerie_armee.php

"Trial of 4 DELAHAYE dismountable tracks on a LATIL tractor, type TAR, to circulate on uneven ground without resistance and without adhesion, and unaffordable to vehicles with ordinary wheels. The Latil is equipped with fittings and cable referrals. Each caterpillar wheel weighs 500 kg and has a bearing surface of approximately 1.60 m2. 1915."

Only 6 build for testing, weight increase by 2 tons and tracks proven too delicate.

      Thx Gary!

  3. That's amazing, I've never seen anything like that from WW1! The 3 guys in the cab must have thought they were the kings of the road-and anywhere else they wanted to go.
