the truck carrying ammonium nitrate wheels caught fire, the truck flipped, and it exploded in southern Arkansas Wednesday morning, and this is the size of the explosion crater and the surrounding damage to the forest on U.S. 278 near Arkansas 57.

The agency said McDougal was hauling ammonium nitrate — a highly combustible chemical used in fertilizers. 63 yr old McDougal called 911 after noticing smoke coming from the truck.

According to the release, McDougal was driving the truck from El Dorado to Texarkansas when the truck brakes of the commercial carrier truck caught on fire and the driver was attempting to extinguish the blaze when it exploded. The Local fire department was informed around 6:40 a.m., and had begun to evacuate residents in the area.

A spokeswoman for the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management said officials haven’t determined what caused the tires to catch fire.
