Lenz chose to go from east to west, leaving in 1892. He vanished in Turkey in 1894, most likely killed by bandits in a dangerous part of the region.

I doubt his tires were worth a 1000 miles, and no way he could get inner tubes once he left the biggestr cities on railroad trunk lines
