They built in a weak spot halfway up the hood so it would crumple on impact and not go through the windshield. But that meand more attention to the hinges so they hinged properly.
I had a Blazer for a while, and you had to be careful closing the hood so it wouldn't bend. I saw a Chevy truck recently that had reinforcements welded under the hood in those spots.
I wonder if the truck was original or restored? When I was buying parts for my Square a couple years ago those hinge reinforcements parts were cheap and easy to come by.
I believe that's closely related to the " you must lubricate the hinges problem".
