Here's a cheat that I haven't heard of before, 2 race cars, one under the minimum allowable weight, the other in spec. The underweight can pull better qualifing times, but isn't legal to race... Penske cheated to solve the problem

Notice the numbers for each car, 15 and 16.

Each car in the photos below wears the opposite number than it did in the actual race. The car with the vent window (wind wing) in the door is the '67 lightweight car from the previous season.

It was under minimum weight and did not get run through tech inspection. They ran the '68 through tech inspection twice by changing the car number in a closed airplane hangar between each inspection.

  1. I've raced off road against cheaters. They cut the course, the marked the smoothest routes through tricky sections during pre-running with plastic tape so they could get through those sections faster and you couldn't pit near them because they would steal anything. I hate cheaters. I don't know why stock car racing glorifies them.

  2. Sounds like a Smokey Yunick trick, when he was racing Hudson Hornets he had hot camshafts that had factory markings on them, they'd swap them out before tech inspection. The tech guys when so far as to put steel bands around his engine to keep him from putting hot parts in after inspection, not realizing they were already there. Smokey almost got caught when he was asked to pull the cam out after a race while the inspectors observed, and then took the cam to check it's specs. Yunick did as he was told but as he pulled the cam out, smashed it against a work bench and broke it into many pieces saying he'd keep part of it so that THEY couldn't sneak something in to falsely incriminate him. Of course he'd damaged it so badly they couldn't do much except run the part number.

    1. I barely recall the story about the cam, I certainly don't recall half that info... dang, that explains a lot!
