After deciding it would be more cost-effective, a Chicago man hauled his first-ever snowmobile over 400 miles on top of his Chevy Malibu to Bessemer Michigan to avoid the expensive cost of renting a trailer to haul it.

“In gas alone I saved 100 bucks,” Mecher said.

According to U-Haul, a trailer used to haul something from the city to the Northwoods would range from $234 to $312.

It took about an hour to load it on the roof of his 2005 Chevy Malibu, using an old blue Ford tractor with a bucket.

When he arrived in Bessemer, it took just nine minutes to remove the snowmobile from its lofty perch with a front end loader and a strap.

  1. I'm surprised the roof didn't cave in, but I see he was smart in the placement of the wood planks to support the slead. He went all the way to the outside edge of the roof.
