A gas station sign so damn big, airplanes used it as a landmark. Photo taken in 1946

It was installed in 1932, it was 70 feet tall, with 5200 light bulbs, and 2900 hundred feet of neon tube

  1. Immagine how much Gasoline you would have to sell everyday to pay that electric bill.

  2. You're right about the electric bill, with all of those neon transformers gulping down the juice. This must have been sponsored by the oil company, surely it cost more to build and maintain the sign than the whole gasoline station was worth.

  3. The Hi-Pointe station has consistently had an oversized sign there since then. They actually just redid it with a newly updated Amoco sign. Google Hi Pointe Amoco sign to see history of the signs they've had.
