So, why can't the companies that make outboards make them simple and cheap?
If anyone can get an aircooled lawnmower engine and do this, why doesn't Johnson and Evindude and Honda?
hell, Honda makes lawnmowers!
The safety and environmental regulations for waterways are different than your front lawn. Elections have consequences.
ReplyDeleteok, but which are more restrictive on airborne emissions? Lawnmower motors don't flush oil and unused fuel into the water - 2 strokes do.
DeleteLawnmotors are two strokes, which means the fuel (pre-mix) includes oil, that doesn't burn; thus the smoke. Outboards typically use water as a muffler, so all exhaust gets dumped into the water. Tince two strokes are nasty little buggers when it comes to exhaust, pumping that into the waterways makes the fish nazi's angry. See where I'm going with this?
ReplyDeleteyes, and most small outboards for dingys are ... yup, 2 stroke. I had a couple myself. Not even able to get them sent into California. Due to the cost of getting a 4 stroke, and higher horse power, I still had to settle for a 4 stroke 2 Hp.
DeleteI also see that a lawnmower engine would not be pumping the exhaust into the water... into the air, yes. But in my decades of mowing lawns I never did see oil coming out the muffler of a lawnmower.
So, in my opinion, a lawn mower engine, being cheaper, less polluting, and easy to by is a good option to rebuilding a broken outboard.
Of course, I've been wrong before.... but this time I have plenty of company from what I saw online
and everywhere I mistakenly said 2 stroke instead of 4 stroke, just imagine I got it correct instead.
Deleteor every time I said 4 stroke instead of 2 stroke, ditto. These comments do not have an edit function so I can go back and make corrections.
