I got a call today from some unprofessional screener about a job I applied for with Recon RF. Not only did he not introduce himself, this is how he started the conversation:

" What is your dream job at this stage of your life "

My reply was to the effect of "nothing your company has to offer, so, can we talk about the jobs your company is hiring for?"

He insisted on that line of questions though, so I replied "photographing and writing about vehicles, but getting paid for it... now, can we discuss the jobs you're trying to screen applicant for?"

(Now keep in mind this is all about applying for an admin assistant job https://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/ofc/d/san-diego-operations-assistant/7741243805.html and not electronics at all)

So, instead, he switched to my formal education in electronics, in the Navy, and wanted to know how long those schools were.... I replied, that's in my resume.

But, he replied how he hadn't memorized my resume.

Ok... no one presumed you would, but most of us logical people figure you'd have a copy in front of you on the computer screen... so, why are you asking me what you already have the answers for? You're not asking about anything relevant. First the dream job? Then my schooling, 33 years ago? It was vacuum tube tech, and periscopes and ESGN, and main frame computers for radar detecting, nothing that has any place in the current job market.

Know what I mean?

If this screener was just wasting time to get paid by the hour, ok, I can understand that, IF he simply says so, as I'm over fifty, and not getting younger, so, before I retire at age 75, lets get to the point of this phone call, you know? If he's simply seeing if I'll verify this stuff on the fly with a random phone call during my day, to see if he can catch someone that pumped up their resume with stuff they've never done, well, fine, ask me to give you references that can verify my resume. I can do that too. I'm still in touch with some shipmates from the earliest of my days in the Navy, to the first sub I crewed on, and shore duty after that as an MP, but no, I don't think I'm in contact with anyone on my 2nd sub, I was there a short time for the 2nd half of a west pac...

anyway, this unprofessional screener paused, so I offered to simply recap my resume, thinking I can get through 20 minutes of wasted time in 2 minutes by covering the past 35 years since high school graduation.

He instantly has a snit fit, and says, no, I'll just pass this to HR and hangs the hell up on me. Wouldn't answer the phone when I called back to give him a chance to understand I was making a good faith offer to save him time, and verify my resume instead of him asking about every line in it.

Anyway, he was a dick, so I called his company phone number and left a message to whomever cares to listen to the voice mail at Recon RF, stating that this screener was unprofessional, but maybe just having a bad day, but needs a tune up on charm and that sort of thing if he wants to actually hire anyone who isn't on the same page with his screening technique. I've been a manager, I've screened out hundreds of resumes, interviewed some people, etc. It's not hard, they simply want to get the job, but not have you waste their time either.

I got a call back around 3 hours later from someone in management that wanted me to recap the message I left, or recap the conversation with the screener.

So, that was also, a waste of time, as they didn't ask me to send them my resume for a look. We already know dickhead number one deleted my info, and without someone who didn't wake up on the wrong side of the cave this morning taking a look at my resume and seeing if I'm qualified for the job, that entire situation is simply nothing more than a waste of time and useful to only give me something to tell all of you about.

Cause that company might make great high tech stuff, but their ability to interact with society at large? Not so good actually.

  1. Last resume I submitted was all pictures of my work and a very brief description of my background. Emailed me back that night wanting me to be there the following morning but I was already at my current job. Called and told them I would be there the following morning. Place did hand forged furniture, custom gates etc. They advertised for a CAD operator so I went. About a three hour meeting with the father in the showroom. Showed me a video of a free forming tube variable radius bender they were buying for a big order going to Houston. Told them I didn't have any idea how to program it and they asked if I would be willing to go to the manufacturer's school. Yeap! I already knew they had a high turnover of blacksmiths but I listened to his spill. Asked him what they had in mind for someone that could learn that software. Stated explaining that we were in a rural area and pay was not as good as big areas. Told him the problem with that think was most everything they sole was high end custom ordered that went out of state including a number of Vegas casinos. (I knew the lady that did their upholstery work as she did the first Scarab we built. Also told him I would not give my work away for anyone bt friends and none of then lived here or would even ask me to. Never got a response to that which told me we were already done but I wanted to see the whole operation. Then he drove us down the highway to the big shop that his son managed for another attempt at cheapness. I already knew I wouldn't be taking that job even if they offered it. Broken mill and lathe, multiple assembly fixtures were not marked and mixed up and other things so that would have been on my list as well. Took me back to the small truck shop across they highway for lunch but I passed as I didn't want to owe them a nickel. Left around 4:00pm. Told me they would make a decision and let me know. Stopped by the upholstery lady and she said that was why she would never agree to hire in as a employee as they were cheap skates and browbeat the office help and anyone the could. She stopped dealing with them shortly after that. They sold the company about two years ago and the new owner had a add out looking for someone. No idea how they are doing and really don't care but I do plan on stopping buy and seeing if they bought that bender. I'll try and find a video of that thing in action. Always some drama/BS living in rural areas!
