but a year ago there was a lot of noise in the news of car insurance that due to the only factors that car insurance is based on - the density of drivers on the roads in your county, and how much you drive - that car insurance companies could not charge as much when both of those factors were drastically reduced

Actually my other half has a motability car here in the UK (cars for disabled people) and we had a refund on part of the insurance after the lockdown last year.

DeleteJesse, com'on. It's the insurance business. They are all part of the cabal. I don't believe they are going to give us a refund, or in this case, reduce our insurance. I know for my own insurance I haven't seen any price reduction or refund. In fact, without fail, it always goes up every time I renew. And my driving record is clean.

ReplyDeleteI have USAA insurance, and I think I got 2 refunds last year because there was less driving going on. You should be eligible for USAA because of your military service. I am eligible because my dad was an officer in the USAF a long time ago.

ReplyDeleteMy CAA car insurance here in Ontario was discounted 10% for the 2020 premium and they sent me another $50. The 2021 premium has been discounted 10%
ReplyDeleteProgressive gave me a 10% discount for a few months, though I wish they would give a first responder discount like some companies are doing. That being said, my 2 daily cars and my one Hagerty (also through Progressive) is less than other offers I've had.

DeleteI have seen your work, been a fan for many years. First found you hunting down vintage Cobra pics, loved your work, and have checked the site daily ever since :). Long-time Mopar fan, all my dailys have been Dodge, Plymouth, or Jeep, thought my first love is ACVWs as that is what we had growing up in northern NH. My dad switched to Dodge trucks when VW started moving from AC to WC. I have a 1979 VW Bus that I've set up for off road exploring and it is also equipped with lights and radios as a first response vehicle if needed.
DeleteAs for my work, my day job is Sr SysAdmin for a software company, in my off-hours I'm an EMT with a rural northern Maine volunteer ambulance service (Stoneham Rescue Service). We serve 4 towns in Oxford County (~200 sq miles, 4000 permanent residents, with probably an additional 4000 in tourist seasons) with a staff of 15 per diem daytime providers and 15 volunteer providers and drivers covering nights and weekends. Volunteering is a dying trend in the country, the struggle to cover shifts - especially at night - is real, and with the pandemic of the last year, even harder :(. A large percentage of our population is eldery, we have the obvious concern for them with Covid and seasonal flu on top of the usual cardiac, stroke, and fall calls. I think the worst calls, though, are the "subject in the water" from going through the ice either fishing or powersports. The roads are all secondary, the distances can be far, and since we are 50% volunteer, the response time includes getting from your house to the station, then from the station to the scene, which is why we equip our personal vehicles to respond in emergencies as well - one will go to the incident in their car\truck, the other goes to get the rig. It is never boring, can be exciting, and definitely rewarding.
