the little cars! Tiny, even by Japanese cars' standards





I wonder if these were an example of parallel evolution of design, or an attempt to get into the Mini market of Europe

  1. Japan plates and taxes were (and still are) based on displacement. Add that to narrow streets and the result is an indigenous micro car market.

  2. These Honda N600s are big engine (599cc!) versions of Japanese Kei cars. These were the first Hondas sold in the US, starting with the 1970 model year...

  3. I first saw one of these (not sure if it was an N360 or an N600) in the early '70s at a Honda motorcycle dealership in Vancouver BC. It belonged to the owner of that shop and I think that it must have been specially imported for him as I don't think that there were any Honda car dealerships around at that time.
    I remember reading somewhere that Honda had copied heavily from the Austin Mini when they designed this car.
