Michigan Governor Snyder explained that military surplus vehicles were not manufactured for on-road use and should be restricted to off-road purposes.

What a moron. They were all built by the engineering and design factors that were developed to the year of manufacture. The frames, same as the civilian equivalent (thinking Jeeps for sure, Humvees, pretty sure) body, mirrors and windshields, and steering... tell me, wtf is the difference between those on a military WW2 or Korean era Jeep and the civilian equivalent? Possibly the shock absorbers, definitely the tires are military or civilian, not both.

there was a law getting some hope up that old Jeeps, Humvees, etc, could get registered as "historic vehicles" which limits them to parade use only, as far as driving on roads... so, this clown basically agrees that they aren't suited to commuter status and unlimited road driving, but prevents them from getting a bit of legal status to prevent Michigan police, some of the most perverse and difficult law enforcement, from harassing ex-military vehicle drivers

  1. Is the problem emission standards, fuel mileage, or something like that the military vehicles might be exempt from?

    1. I didn't see his reason. I suspect that his reason was that lobbyists didn't pay him enough bribe money to get him to sign the bill into law.

  2. WE are the silly here. He's probably profiting from this decision. Politicians don't care about safety, they profit from it.

  3. OK, so he's using a page out of the Mother's Handbook, "Because I Said So".
That's legit because the politicians are all mothers.

  4. The current manufacturers of vehicles dont want cheap plentiful surplus vehicles available for consumers to buy

the military vehicles usually have seat belts and are diesel powered and have a high gross vehicle weight rating which in most places are exempt from emission restrictions,

  5. Gov. Snyder should know that there are probably thousands of military vehicles that travel through Michigan every year for National Guard training in the Grayling area. And the roads in Michigan are so bad that you need a HMMV to survive the potholes!

    1. governors don't drive, they get flown or helicoptered. I did a story on the aircraft states own and what they are used for, about 3 years ago
