The Hawkbill made five war patrols during World War II.
She sank five ships for a total of 28,400 tons and damaged 12,500 tons of shipping.
One of the five ships Hawkbill sank was responsible for sinking USS Lagarto and depth charging USS Cobia.
The Hawkbill received one Legion of Merit, one Silver Star, one Gold Star in lieu of a second Silver Star, six Bronze Medals, one Gold Star in lieu of a second Bronze Star, and fourteen Letters of Commendation and Ribbons.

One of the unsung heroes of Disney’s WWII efforts is artist Henry “Hank” Porter who was a one man designer of many emblems and insignias during World War II, hired by Disney in 1936, and worked on Snow White.

One of the most highly decorated ships of the World War 2 Pacific Submarine Force, she made six war patrols, earning five battle stars and two Presidential Unit Citation awards. Commander Lawson P. Ramage also was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for stealthily attacking from the middle of a convoy, on the surface at night.

Return of the Phantom Blot
The Disney insigne recalled the Phantom Blot, a creation from the mind of Floyd Gottfredson which appeared on the cover of the first Mickey Mouse comic book "Mickey Mouse Outwits The Phantom Blot"
This art was given the designation "US Atlantic Fleet, Composite Squadron 8".
Insignia created for the USS Kaloli (AOG-13), a gasoline tanker acquired by the U.S. Navy for the dangerous task of transporting aviation gasoline to warships in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and to remote Navy stations.
Armament included one single 3"/50 cal. dual purpose gun mount and four single 20mm AA gun mounts.
Awards: American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War 2 Victory Medal. This insignia was presented to the Kaloli and her crew in July of 1943.
USS Queenfish (SS-393)
submarine USS Sennet SS 408 was named after a type of Barraccuda found in tropical and subtropical seas. It has large razorsharp and knife-like teeth as it is seen here attacking its prey represented by a Japanese octopus. She earned four battle stars and the Asiatic-Pacific Area Service Medal while offically sinking seven ships with a tonnage of 17,726 (unoffically it was eleven ships totaling 35,700 tons and damaging one ship of 500 tons)
submarine USS Aspro SS 309 was a Balao class diesel-electric submarine named for a poisonous fish found in Asia and Oceania having a thin, elongated body and black stripes. Legend says the aspro comes to the surface only in bad weather,when other fishes take refuge near the bottom. This trait gave rise to its nickname "Sorcerer" which in this case means a dealer of death. Here we see torpedoes being dealt to the Japanese enemy represented by a beetle. The Aspro won seven battle stars for her World War II service while offically sinking five ships with a tonnage of 21,854.
Ship Construction Repair and Maintenance (aka shipyard)
In June 1944, members of the Army Nurse Corps and the 369th Station Hospital were sent from Oahu to the island of Saipan.
The hospital consisted of tent structures and had a functional bed capacity of 250. Despite having a maximum capacity of 750 beds, during the invasion of Iwo Jima, the hospital actually cared for 1,342 patients.
Prior to America’s declaration of war there were 1,200 doctors in the Army. By war’s end that number ballooned to 50,000.
During the same time frame, the number of nurses in the Army Nurse Corps rose from 1,000 to 52,000.
The design pictured in this post was created by artist Hank Porter in January 1945.
Albert Paul Krueger convinced the Navy’s Bureau of Medicine and Surgery to found Naval Laboratory Research Unit 1. The lab was mobilized as an active duty unit on January 31, 1941, and renamed Naval Medical Research Unit 1 (NAMRU-1)
In May 1950, Krueger’s unit was renamed the Naval Biological Laboratory.
Hank Porter created the emblem for NAMRU-1 in the spring of 1944.
USS Mercy was acquired by the Navy in March 1943, and was converted from a cargo ship to a hospital ship in August 1944. She was commanded and crewed by the Navy on behalf of the Army.
Unlike Navy hospital ships, Mercy was designed to evacuate and transport wounded service personnel after they had received primary care.
Over the course of her deployment, Mercy transferred patients from various invasion islands to base hospitals.
Mercy was decommissioned in May 1946 and struck from the Naval Register four months later. Hank Porter created her emblem in the spring of 1944 and his use of Snow White and Dopey represents one of the few times these characters were used on insignia.
